The Essex Gang Prevention Service (GPS) has been set up to tackle the emerging problems of criminal exploitation and youth violence across the Essex region. The problem of exploitation crosses a broad spectrum of communities and demographics and not just those within Social Care or the Criminal Justice system.
For this reason the GPS is focusing its resources on young people yet to enter the criminal justice system, or not open to Social Care. The GPS is attempting to build resilience within communities by working with Community Safety Partnerships to construct consistent information sharing and deliver locality-specific interventions. This is the purpose of the exploitation framework meetings which aim to allocate resource and manage risk of young people not yet known to statutory agencies.
The GPS also plays a key role in the intervention mix provided through the exploitation framework. We have a bespoke programme designed specifically to assist exploited young people and their families.
A third part of the GPS's role will be to provide consultation to Youth Offending Service and Social Care practitioners.
